Upside Living, Inc. is a proud supporter of Entrepreneurial micro finance programs facilitated by Opportunity International. As a global e-boutique, we feel strongly that giving back is an important extension of our core business principles. We donate a portion of our revenue to programs that encourage, educate and provide micro loans to the poorest Entrepreneurs who desire an opportunity to get out of poverty. Currently working in 28 nations, Opportunity International is working hard for their clients in Africa, India, Philippines, Nicaragua and many others. In 1971, two businesspeople on two different continents asked similar questions in search of a long-term solution to the problem of poverty. What do poor people need? The poor answered, "Work. With jobs, we will solve our own problems."
 Al Whittaker, former president of Bristol Myers International Corporation, founded the first Opportunity International program in Latin America. Australian entrepreneur David Bussau founded a similar program in Indonesia. Three years later, the two programs united.
Opportunity now serves over 1,000,000 clients annually and expects to be serving 2 million by 2010. By addressing and transforming poverty, Opportunity International continues to change the course of generations, communities and countries - person by person. The Gates Foundation has provided three grants totaling $41.8 million to Opportunity International since November 2005 in support of their micro finance, micro-shcools and micro insurance programs for the poor. AIDS Orphan Bracelets Project
We also support the Aids Orphan Bracelet project where 100% of the dollars generated by the sale of these bracelets provide HIV vaccinations and support child who are orphans due to AIDS. Each bracelet is handmade in Africa by an AIDS orphan or a woman who supports AIDS orphans. Each bracelet is truly unique. Red stands for AIDS, which has devastated Africa. Yellow represents Hope. $20 can do any one of the following...
- provide antiretroviral treatments to an infected child for six weeks*
- train an AIDS orphan in a marketable skill
- help legally defend the rights of a widow or orphan to keep their home
- provide food supplements to a family supporting an additional child for three months
- provide materials for AIDS education to an entire youth group
- can pay school fees for an AIDS orphan for three months
