Bowron Sheepskin Company: Steeped in History and Tradition
Brothers George and William Bowron, both Master Tanners from Yorkshire, set sail in 1879 for the new colony of New Zealand and landed in a small settlement community called Christchurch. Like all pioneers of their day, the brothers Bowron journey was inspired by their desire for a better life and to chase a lifelong dream to start their own tannery.
As the years passed, the once small community of Christchurch expanded, as did the tannery that was started by the Bowron brothers in 1881. The Bowron sheepskin business thrived and the high standards set by the brothers began a proud family tradition of exceptional tanning.
125 years later, the company continues to put quality into every piece and client commitment into every sale. The name Bowron is known worldwide and is revered as being the premiere purveyor of sheepskin products.
From lambskin rugs to sheepskin rugs for your pet; customers know and respect the quality of Bowron. Using the same tanning techniques that were developed by the Bowron brothers in the 1800’s, the proprietary 42-step tanning process has been refined over the years and now is the focal point of the Bowron success story.
It is truly a story of how one family with a passion for the tanning industry acquired unsurpassed access to the finest materials available, developed meticulous industry leading processes and built a worldwide delivery network to make available to the public the finest sheepskins. Even on this day, the Bowron sheepskin product that you are about to purchase for your home is made using the very same techniques that the brothers Bowron started in 1881 and the Bowron Sheepskin Company has been perfecting for the past 125 years.
Carefully Selected Raw Materials
At Bowron, even though the finest raw materials are sourced out from around the globe, the true quality in our sheepskin products is due largely to the availability of the world’s finest lambs right in our homeland of New Zealand and neighboring Australia.
Bowron has tanneries in both New Zealand and Australia, located in prime sheep and farm areas. Our locale is critical to the immediate availability of the premier raw materials we procure. Within the tanneries, all materials coming in and finished sheepskin products going out are painstakingly scrutinized by trained professionals to ensure excellence and consistent quality.
Innovation, Design and Value
The processes used at Bowron may be time honored, but our designs are current, modern and cutting edge. We employ industry leading skilled craftsmen who keep abreast with the pulse of the global community; anticipated desired designs and starting trends.
Our customers, both current and future are never forgotten. We work hard to source out the best materials, use the most effective tanning methods, and source out excellent global partners; all in an effort to provide our clientele with the finest quality sheepskins available anywhere at highly competitive price points. Our customers expect nothing less than exceptional from Bowron, and our goal is to never disappoint.
Working in Harmony with the Environment
In the traditional practice of tanning, making sheepskins was costly to our environment due to heavy chemical usage. Always the innovative leader, Bowron developed cutting edge chemistry and utilizes advanced mechanical technology which is kind to our Mother Earth. To preserve nature, we perform regular audits which have proven Bowron as a clear leader in providing exceptional products that developed in an environmentally friendly manner.
That is the whole story – the legacy that is Bowron – 125 years in the making
